WHY BELONG TO THE LEGION?

To help members explain to eligible Veterans why they should join The American Legion, headquarters has put together an excellent, updated 20-page brochure to explain all the benefits. It is a wonderful source to explain the Legion's programs, with almost 50 of them listed in the brochure. The back page even has a Membership Enrollment Application. There are copies at our Post, hanging on the bulletin board by the bar. You can also take a look at it or download the .PDF file in our Digital Forms Library by clicking the brochure to right>>>>

Even if you are a current member, it is still worth a look-see to familiarize yourself with all that the American Legion does for Veterans, National Security, Americanism and Children & Youths.

Included in these programs, here are some statistics from the Legion's fiscal year 2011:xxx Legionnaires performed 3,899,125 hours of community service, spent $4,249,713 performing community services, donated $2,319,797 to emergency aid to communities, gave 80,097 pints of blood, presented 21,074 school medal awards, provided honors at 109,475 funerals for Veterans and military personnel, donated $1,037,926 to the American Legion Legacy Scholarship fund (to help the children of military personnel killed on duty) and had 34,621 members registered in VA Volunteer services. And, this was with only 8,344 Posts (60%) out of 13,807 total Posts reporting by turning in their Consolidated Post Reports. So, on average, you can take all the above figures and probably multiply by 50% to 60% to get the probable TOTAL figures.

On top of this, it included 2,058 Posts with web sites (we be one of them), 1,464 Posts that hold an event to recognize the anniversary of 9/11 (we not be one), 4,401 with local Flag Day activities (we not be one), 6,899 with a local Veterans Day event (we be one) and 7,317 with a local Memorial Day activity (again, we be one). Again, increase these figures by 50-60% to get a better idea of total Posts doing these things each year. Maybe next year our Post will be included in those holding 9/11 and Flag Day events.
